Everyone likes to\u00a0<\/span>go for a getaway to the nature and do outdoor activities. Particularly\u00a0<\/span>now when<\/span>\u00a0the pandemic has pushed us\u00a0<\/span>towards destination in open and\u00a0<\/span>non-crowded places.\u00a0<\/span>However,\u00a0<\/span>there\u2019s no need to be a genius to realise that, if we don\u2019t travel responsibly,\u00a0<\/span>these dream sites<\/span>\u2019 days are numbered.\u00a0<\/span>And here\u2019s where the concepts of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ecotourism\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ecotour<\/span><\/span>\u00a0become important<\/span>: tourism models which are respectful towards nature,\u00a0<\/span>culture, and local population of the destinations, and which intend to promote conservation and respect\u00a0<\/span>for the land and its people.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is ecotourism and what is an ecotour about?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition and principles of ecotourism<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n

As it usually happens with these international terms,\u00a0each dictionary and organisation has\u00a0its own\u00a0approach. There are countless definitions of ecotourism and\u00a0ultimately,\u00a0they all agree\u00a0that\u00a0\u2013big surprise\u2013 the core idea is to do tourism respecting the environment.\u00a0However, the devil is in the details.\u00a0If I am to pick a definition, I\u2019ll go with the\u00a0GEN\u2019s (Global Ecotourism Network) one.\u00a0The GEN says that ecotourism is\u00a0<\/span>\u201cresponsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and creates knowledge and understanding through interpretation and education of all involved: visitors, staff and the visited\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This definition is further translated into\u00a0principles, guidelines,\u00a0and criteria (for ecotourism certifications).\u00a0The basic principles of ecotourism,\u00a0which should be followed by\u00a0all those who implement, participate in, and market ecotourism activities, are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
