Overview

Camí Oliba

The Oliba Route is a long distance trail (GR-151) connecting some of the most representative works of the catalan Romanesque art. It runs between Montserrat and the Pyrenees, passing through some of the towns with greater history of Old Catalunya, such as Manresa, Vic, Ripoll and Sant Joan de les Abadesses. It crossess the inland and mid-mountain landscapes of the Bages, Osona and Ripollès regions following an undemanding itinerary surrunded with touristic and commercial servicies of great added value.

The Oliba Route, one of the most emblematic hiking routes in Catalunya, is a true museum in the middle of nature. It is art, culture and history in its pure essence, in places almost unaltered through time. It is a journey through the origins of Catalunya, the time when personalities such as Bishop and Abbot Oliba decided to repopulate and Christianize these lands sowing them with churches and monasteries.

Stage 0: Arrival in Montserrat.
Stage 0: Arrival in Montserrat.

Arrival in Montserrat. Check-in at the lodging and dinner.

Stage 1: Montserrat – Manresa
Stage 1: Montserrat – Manresa

Estimated duration: 7 hours.
Distance: 24,53 km.
The outing from the Monastery of Montserrat is turly spendid, not only because of its location –right in the middle of the homonymous Natural Park– but because it provides a high-altitude departure, which means that the following trail is purely downhill. Whether it is true that the landscape is quite dry and sometimes over-urbanised, the arrival on foot to Manresa is lovely, and it connects two representative towns of the region.
Accomodation in Manresa on a Half-Board basis.

Stage 2: Manresa – Artés
Stage 2: Manresa – Artés

Estimated duration: 5:10 hours.
Distance: 20,90 km.
The stretch between Manresa and Navarcles is gentle and flat, running mainly beside the streams and canals that hydrate the territory, such as the Llobregat river. Almost arriving to Navarcles, you will discover the beauty and austerity of the most important Romanesque monument in the Bages region, Sant Benet.
From Navarcles to Artés you will encounter a flat trail and a relaxed stroll through rainfed land and pine forests, gently stroked by the Llobregat river and the ravine of Calders. Artés is a wine town strongly bound to local tradition and culture; we must highlight the festivities of Sant Joan and La Verema (the wine harvest).
Accomodation in Mas de la Sala on a Half-Board basis.

Stage 3: Artés – L’Estany
Stage 3: Artés – L’Estany

Estimated duration: 6 hores.
Distance: 23,20 km.
The path from Artés to l'Estany runs through the pine forests and pastures of the Bages region. It is a long trail with a constant positive slope, although noble and peaceful. This area is the true hart of Catalunya, a forgotten land extremely linked to its local tradition. This path is ideal for finding milk-caps during the mushroom season.
Accomodation in l’Estany on a Half-Board basis.

Stage 4: L’Estany – Vic
Stage 4: L’Estany – Vic

Estimated duration: 6 hours.
Distance: 20,44 km.
The stage from l'Estany to Vic is a natural connection between two dissimilar regions, united only by geographic proximity. The trail traverses the beautiful landscapes of the Moianès region, overflowing pine and showing us loamy soils for the first time. Here, the oaks and the holm oaks are present in a smooth land of pastures and green crops, all sprinkled with country houses.
Arrival in Vic and end of route. Optional lodging overnight.
